    Where to live in Atlanta???

My wife and I, along with our 2 year old are relocating to Atlanta this Spring, need some advice on where to move to!  We would very much like to be inside 285, either looking from Brookhaven down to Decatur...  I work from home, not worried about commute times etc...  Need to be in a walking friendly area i.e. sidewalks, parks, etc...  Would ideally love to walk to Piedmont Park, but flexible.  Must haves are a 3-4  bedroom, 3 bath house at a minimum, with a basement preferrably...  Any suggestions?  I have been recommended in the past to look at Oakhurst/Kirkwood, Decatur, Morningside, etc.... any others out there or comments on the above? We would like to spend no more than 600k if possible.... Any help would be greatl appreciated!

All of the above suggestions are good choices; however, Grant Park which is where the Atlanta Zoo is located is also a great choice. I would highly suggest visiting this area of town as it is really one of our up and coming submarkets in town. Also Grant Park has homes that would work well for your budget and size of home you are looking to buy and now is definitely the time to do so. Best of luck to you and your family.

All great recommendations above, but Candler Park is teeming with young families and is a very friendly neighorhood overall. Just on my street in a 2 block section, there are 8 households with kids under 5!  Makes for fun porch parties. The playground at Candler Park is very popular, and you can easily walk to family-friendly restaurants in Candler Park. Suggest you explore the neighborhoods mentioned above, which incidentally are all very close to each other.

I am also looking to relocate to Atlanta in June of this year. I am looking at the Jonesboro and Stockbridge areas. Can anyone give me any advice? I have an 11 year old daughter so I am looking at schools as well as family friendly neighborhoods.

    Thanks!

Not sure if you already found something but the area between Little 5 points and Candler park is a great area too, called Edgewood.

We live there with our 2 year old but have to move. We dont have a basement but a guesthouse and a pool.

If you found something already, you would love atlanta.

You have probably already found something consider how old the original post is however this will probably be reviewed by those in a similar situation. All those areas mentioned are good. Don't forget to check out the Virginia Highlands or Brookhaven areas. Decatur can be spotty as some areas are still transitional. If you have kids Decatur has a great school district and plans for keeping a "small town" feel in the city. If interested in buying a home or reading more info on specific areas http://www.atlantahomerealtor.com has a user friendly interface with lots of options and snap shots of specific communities.

    Hi Jnbarnes,

Stockbridge, Ga (Henry County Schools) has a good school system and the area has a lot to offer.  Good luck!

Re: Where to live in Atlanta???

I have lived in Buckhead and Morningside/VA Highlands.  Each of those areas are very nice and located close to many intown activities.  Additionally we are Atlanta movers so I see most areas of town and the houses associated with these areas.  In Morningside you have alot of homes built between 1920-1940 with "tudor" brick being most prevelant...In VA Highlands (most people around Atlanta think of VA Highlands and Morningside as the same) the homes are old as well but you get more bungalos.  The VA Highlands/Morningside area is very child and family with shops and dinning in small "villages" mixed in to the area.  The other big issue in VA Highlands and Morningside is schooling (morninside elementry was just remapped leaving most of VA Highlands kids to attend a yet to be built school).

Decatur is nice (older homes like Morningside and Vahighlands) as well but it tends to be less accesible via main roads and it has some what of a reputation as being "left leaning" there are some very good public schools in Deactur as well.

Buckhead is very nice (with some very large homes) but it is more commercial with two very large malls (lenox and Phipps) and many high rise office, condo, and hotels in the area.  Odly the schools are very hit and miss and not always reflective of the area they are in (i.e. some very nice areas in Buckhead have horrible schools).

In this market for Morningside/VA Highlands/Decatur you should be able to get a nice older home 1,500 to 2,000. sq feet that has good curb appeal (you may need to update but you should do well in the next few years if the market improves).

Some of the other "up and comming" intown markets are fine as well but you may want to stay in one of the better established stable intown areas.
