Gypsy Music Meets the Bayou's Best at the Rialto Center for the Arts

(ATLANTA) - Georgia State University's Rialto Center for the Arts continues its 2008-09 season with Gypsy Jambalaya featuring Les Yeux Noirs and Cedric Watson & Bijoux Créole, Saturday, January 24, 2009, at 8 PM. Kick off the Mardi Gras season with fiddling marvels Les Yeux Noirs, on a double-bill with Creole music sensation Cedric Watson.

Violin-wielding brothers front the Gypsy-Yiddish sextet Les Yeux Noirs as they explore the musical styles of a culture forged in oppression and exile from its homeland. French for "The Black Eyes," Les Yeux Noirs take their name from a Russian Gypsy tune made famous by Django Reinhart in the 1930s. Grammy nominated Watson meanwhile has emerged as one of the brightest talents in Cajun and Creole music of the past few years. With a seemingly endless repertoire of songs at his fingertips, Watson plays everything from long-forgotten Creole melodies and obscure reels to modern Zydeco songs influenced by R& B, hip-hop, and reggae.

Watson and Bijoux Créole-his exciting new Zydeco band from Louisiana's Acadiana-share the stage with Les Yeux Noirs in an unexpected but wholly satisfying combination. Where else but at the Rialto?

Les Yeux Noirs
Les Yeux Noirs, meaning "Black Eyes," is a Paris-based band that has been captivating audiences for years. Violinists Eric and Olivier Slabiak started Les Yeux Noirs ten years ago. The brothers decided to incorporate their Jewish heritage into a unique style called gypsy/Yiddish. Consisting of violins, violoncello, accordion, electric guitar, cimbalom, and electronic samples, the band takes you from a soft, slow sound to rapid rhythms that keep audiences dancing.

Cedric Watson
Cedric Watson is a fiddler, violinist and songwriter from a Cajun background of southern Louisiana. Watson offers a unique sound and personality to his Créole music style that keeps audiences entertained with his energetic performances. He has played across the United States as well as in France, Nova Scotia, Haiti and Spain. Watson strives to take his music to the Creole Nations around the world. Cedric's self-titled debut release was nominated for a Grammy this fall as the only zydeco album in the category of Best Zydeco/Cajun Music Album.

Alliance Theatre to Stage Revolutionary New Gospel Musical: Jesus Christ Superstar

ATLANTA - There's a reason to rejoice at the Alliance Theatre this January as the Tim Rice/Andrew Lloyd Webber blockbuster rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar hits the Alliance Stage in an exhilarating new gospel production. The Alliance is thrilled to be mounting its largest production in 20 years, the rousing gospel event: Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. Audiences will experience the hit musical as never before in an inspirational, hand-clapping event that puts the power of praise back into the gospels. Alliance Theatre Artistic Director Susan V. Booth directs this groundbreaking musical about the last seven days of the life of Christ. Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL puts Judas at the center of the passion story with a rich and deeply human point of view. The show begins with Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem and continues through the exhilaration and apprehension of the new leader, the effect of the crowds on the Roman occupation forces, and Jesus' betrayal, trial and crucifixion.

This new version will highlight Atlanta's rich gospel tradition with an extraordinary 27-member local choir on stage alongside a Broadway-caliber cast. Andrew Lloyd Webber's score gets an inspirational new beat that will move audiences to new heights with memorable songs like "I Don't Know How to Love Him," "Everything's Alright" and "Could We Start Again Please?"

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Lyricist Tim Rice gave special permission to develop this new interpretation of the work to Louis St. Louis, an experienced Broadway and film composer and music director (credits include Smokey Joe's Café, Grease, Grease 2 and Mahogany), whose own musical roots spring from the Detroit Pentecostal Church.

Members of the artistic team that will bring this new gospel musical to life on stage are Michael Yeargan, set designer; Paul Tazewell, costume designer; Robert Wierzel, lighting designer; Jon Weston, sound designer; Darryl Jovan Williams, gospel vocal arranger; Dave Pierce, orchestrator; and Jade Lambert Smith, dramaturg.

Performances are Tuesday through Friday at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Jan. 14 - Feb. 22, 2009 on the Alliance Stage. There will not be a matinee performance on Saturday, Jan. 17.

Atlanta Rollergirls Announce 2009 Season Schedule
Plus Multi-Day National Tournament

Prepares for 5^th Successful Season

Atlanta (January 2009) - Atlanta Rollergirls (ARG) are proud to announce the schedule for their fifth action-packed season! Coming off a Sold-Out Season in 2008, these fierce women are upping the ante for 2009 with more seats available to each bout, more all-star interleague action, and a multi-day, national tournament hosted in conjunction with the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA).

If the Atlanta Rollergirls heard one consistent request from their fans last season, it was, "We can't get tickets to the bouts because they sell out in advance!" So, the skater-owned and operated organization decided to compromise. "We love playing at the Shrine Center and we don't want to play anywhere else, at least for a while," said Angela Ward, a.k.a. Tanya Hyde, league founder and current President. "So, we decided to sell the bouts separately and allow twice as many people the opportunity to see us play."

The skaters have also raised the bar on interleague play (bouts played between two teams representing leagues all over the United States). Atlanta's All-Star team, the Dirty South Derby Girls, will travel more miles than they ever have before, playing 10 derby dates across America to defend and increase Atlanta's national ranking within the WFTDA. DSDG and Atlanta's B-Team combine the best skaters from each of ARG's four home teams (Apocalypstix, Denim Demons, Toxic Shocks & Sake Tuyas) to compete against visiting leagues from Florida to Colorado during regular double-headers at home this season.

In addition to the Regular Season, ARG has been selected by the WFTDA to host the nation's South Central Regional Tournament, September 25-27, 2009. This will be the largest roller derby event ever held in the Southeast with an estimated 5,000 attendees including athletes and fans from more than 15 states. ABOUT ARG: The Atlanta Rollergirls roller derby league (atlantarollergirls.com) provides hard-hitting sports entertainment to thousands of fans. Founded in 2004, and more than 50 women strong, the skaters range in age from 21 to 40-something. Fernbank Museum Kicks Off 2009 Season of Martinis & IMAX®

Fernbank Museum of Natural History will kick off the 2009 season of Martinis & IMAX® presented by Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. on January 2. Martinis & IMAX® is held every Friday from January through November and features live music, dancing, a dinner menu, full bar specializing in martinis, and IMAX® screenings.

After success in 2008, Martinis & IMAX® will also feature a number of special theme nights in 2009, including a Swing Dance Party, Valentine's Day event, St. Patrick's Day celebration, Cinco de Mayo party and the second annual Fernbank Fright Night.

Atlanta Downtown: Walkability Factor

I had a surprisingly good time downtown last night. Holiday decorations and ice skating continue to draw crowds and the older brick buildings in the Fairlie-Popular District makes Atlanta seem like a "real city". What is a real city though? For me, it is the sense of culture, people on the streets, variety of arts and recreational opportunities and walkability.

Now I was like most of Atlantans, scared to even step foot or drive through downtown several years ago. There is the soliciting factor and it surely isn't like going through pristine Buckhead. But the thing I find interesting is that once you set out on foot in a place, it takes out the fear factor. I'm usually more comfortable on foot vs. driving in a car. Maybe it is because you are really interacting with the place and that familiarity on the ground adds a sense of comfort. Of course, having more people out on the streets makes the environment that much safer and the late night ice skating at Centennial Olympic Park, for instance, keeps people out later and in downtown. And there are the sporting events, Tabernacle concerts, Georgia Aquarium, rooftop bars. Screen on the Green, which was moved to Centennial last summer, turned out to be a surprisingly fitting venue. There is something about being able to see the city skyline, while being right in the middle of the city and enjoying events.

So, don't be too scared of downtown. I wouldn't spend too much time walking alone, but according to some reports, crime in downtown is less than other areas of the city. Plus, the Georgia State University police adds to the security. Walk Score has an interesting Web site that ranks Atlanta's most walkable neighborhoods if you want to see how your area stacks up or practice in your neighborhood before an adventure downtown.

Free Inauguration Tickets - What Your Georgia Senator Can Do For You

Finally, something concrete that you can get out of your senator.

Until just recently, I didn't realize that you could contact your senator for free presidential inauguration tickets, a savings of $750. Georgia's senators Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson have links on their websites to request tickets for Barack Obama's inauguration, January 20 in Washington D.C. I'm not sure if they have any still available, but worth a shot if you want catch a flight or take a 10-hour road trip for the historic event. The AJC also has a nice Inauguration Event Guide for more detailed information of what to expect and what there is to do, including the inaugural parade down Pennsylvania Avenue, which is free.

It probably wouldn't hurt to investigate more of our senator's Web sites so see what is going on and how you can get involved. It is always important to know how your senator is representing you, what your senator is saying on the floor and what they are voting on. It is easy to let elections roll around and to not have details to go along with a name. With the recent senator run-off in December, it becomes that much more important to know the candidates and what they value in close elections.

Here's to getting more involved and getting free stuff in 2009.

Georgia Aquarium Welcomes New Shark Pups

The Georgia Aquarium is excited to announce the arrival of 12 new spotted wobbegong shark pups. The pups were born last week in the Ocean Voyager exhibit built by The Home Depot. Their average weight at birth was 2.6 oz (74 grams) and 8.3 in (21 cm).

Native to coastal Australia, the spotted wobbegong (Orectolobus maculatus) is ovoviviparous, meaning a developing pup feeds from a yolk sac of its egg retained internally within the female and is later born fully formed. Biologists diving in the exhibit found the pups last week. The new pups are in good health and are currently in the Education Loop Aqua Lab aquaculture laboratory, where biologists can easily monitor and track their progression. The pups can be seen in person by going on any of the Behind the Scenes Tours that the Aquarium offers.

“We are proud to welcome the new shark pups to the Georgia Aquarium family.” said Mike Leven, CEO of Georgia Aquarium. “We believe that it is important for guests to see all stages of development in our animals, especially birth.”

This unusual shark is a master of camouflage with a mottled pattern on its body that makes it virtually disappear against the sand and algae-covered ocean floor. It can even change color, over several days’ time, to adjust to environmental changes. The beard of fleshy tassels further obscures the outline of the shark’s head, making it very hard to tell where the animal stops and the bottom begins.

The spotted wobbegongs are among the third species of shark pups born at the Aquarium. Previous births include zebra sharks (Stegostoma fasciatum) and bonnethead sharks (Sphyrna tiburo).

Music at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

The First Emperor Named one of Time Magazine’s Top 10 Exhibits of 2008

TIME Magazine has selected “The First Emperor: China’s Terracotta Army” as one of the Top 10 Museum Exhibits of 2008 (view article). The exhibition, which opened to the public on November 16, has already drawn over 70,000 visitors and drove a record one-day attendance of nearly 7,000 visitors to the High on the day after Thanksgiving, November 28. “The First Emperor” was inspired by one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. Featuring over 100 works, including 15 terracotta figures, the exhibition represents one of the largest groups of important works relating to the First Emperor ever to be loaned to the U.S.

From December 26 through January 4, the High will have special extended hours and daily art-making activities. The museum will also be open on Monday, December 29.

Tickets: Individual ticket prices are $18 for adults; $15 for students and seniors with ID; $11 for ages 6 to 17; and free for age 5 and under. Discounted tickets are available for groups of 10 or more. Tickets allow entry into “The First Emperor” and all other special exhibition and permanent collection galleries.

In Inman Park, there has been a home break-in and carjacking at the MARTA station in the last week. Last week a home invasion in Ormewood Park and a car stolen from East Atlanta Village. Midtown Mugger is still loose around 10th and Piedmont/Juniper/Peachtree, who sometimes pretends to be a cop.

Please be advised and be aware. Crime is picking up with the holidays, people traveling and the shorter days. It is really is a source of stress and concern. Be more vigilant around your home and when you are out. Here are some common sense tips for protecting yourself, your car, your home:

be alert
don't leave anything in your car
use motion lights and leave lights on inside your house when out
carry mace or pepper spray
avoid being on your phone or multitasking while walking
use deadbolts and lock windows
install a security alarm or security alarm sign, whether or not you actually have it.
leave a tv or radio on when out
park near street lights
don't walk alone
have your keys in hand
walk in the street, especially around bushy sidewalks
don't flash your expensive items or have them be visible in your home from windows and doors

Today, Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin unveiled an Atlanta holiday window display on Good Morning America’s (GMA) annual seasonal showcase of American cities. Atlanta is one of three cities picked this year for the display in GMA’s ground level studios windows in New York’s Times Square. Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau in partnership with Brand Atlanta tapped designers at Abcom Inc. to create the giant snow-globe display.

Rosa Mexicano - Gluten Free gourmet Mexican fare in Atlanta

Rosa Mexicano opened in Atlantic Station well over a year ago and somehow I never tried it until September of this year. I’d read a rave review of the Manhattan location but thought I was reading a review for the Atlanta location as it was on Catherine’s blog. I thought she’d tried the Atlanta restaurant when visiting as she often did when at her previous job. After seeing the pictures of the food she had in NYC, I had to try and eat at the location here - if possible to do so safely gluten free. The menus vary slightly at each location but most of the menu items in Atlanta are naturally gluten free. I found this out by speaking with a company executive in NYC.

Our first visit to Rosa Mexicano was for brunch. It was good, but basic breakfast food with a Mexican twist. I had an egg and cheese scramble served in an iron skillet with rice and beans (they are both gluten free). We also had chips with red and green salsa and the red sauce was phenomenal. We have some good glutenoid friends that are always willing to try new places with us and they enjoyed their meals as well.

My next meal at Rosa Mexicano was for lunch. I met a gluten free friend there and we had the tableside guacamole service to start. It was surprisingly fast and very good. Still, the red sauce was my favorite for the chips. I could eat it by the gallon. For my meal I tried Suizas (two soft corn tortillas filled with pulled roasted chicken, topped with a creamy tomatillo sauce and queso fresco), which the server recommended and it was really good. I took half of it home for later. My friend ordered something similar to chicken fajitas and also enjoyed her dish.

Right when we thought our meal was over the server brought out desserts which the manager had ordered for us. The Chef made us Mexican Sundaes complete with both vanilla and chocolate ice cream and Mexican caramel sauce which included toasted coconut. It was amazing and I don’t even really like ice cream desserts.

When in Atlanta, or anywhere they have a Rosa Mexicano location, you should treat yourself to a gourmet Mexican meal, whether you’re gluten free or not. They are a customer service oriented restaurant which you’d assume all restaurants are but....at least here, that is not the case. Many places are all style without much substance to back it up. Rosa Mexicano is the real deal!

Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau has partnered with local designers at Abcom, Inc. to develop and engineer an Atlanta holiday window display for Good Morning America’s annual seasonal showcase of American cities. More than 4.3 million viewers will tune in on Thursday, Dec. 4 when Mayor Shirley Franklin unveils the window on GMA. Atlanta was one of three cities chosen to create a holiday window which will be displayed in GMA’s ground level studios windows in Times Square for the remainder of the year. Todd Gurley and his design team at Abcom, Inc. developed and engineered the snow globe from a concept created by Bette Sammons with ACVB.The window showcases 12 notable Atlanta landmarks that are encompassed in a 13.5-foot-wide snow globe, integrated with movement and lighting effects, and frosted with holiday traditions, from southern grits to holiday glitz. To support the theme, large, glittery snowflakes surround the globe and 15 pounds of “real grits” simulate snow falling on the landmarks. Some of the holiday events captured in the snow globe include ice skating at Centennial Olympic Park, Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker at the Fabulous Fox Theatre, and Macy’s Pink Pig ride, an annual holiday tradition since 1953.

ACVB Brings a Piece of Southern Hospitality to New York City

Beginning Wednesday, Dec. 3, Good Morning America's ground level studio windows in Times Square will be transformed to represent three cities - Kansas City, Denver, and...ATLANTA! The windows will bring viewers – and people who visit in person – a fun and festive look at holiday traditions in each city. (Click here to discover some of Atlanta's holiday traditions.)

Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau has partnered with Abcom, Inc. to develop and engineer the window which will be unveiled Thursday, Dec. 4 on GMA to more 4.3 million viewers nationwide and will become a backdrop for the show for the remainder of the year. The window will showcase iconic Atlanta attractions that are encompassed in a 13.5-foot-wide snow globe and frosted with holiday traditions, from southern grits to holiday glitz.

Rules of the Road: Walking, Biking and Driving in Atlanta

I chewed out a yuppie kid driving a BMW tonight after he honked at me in a parking lot for being "too slow".

I was waiting for some cars to pass out of the intersection so I could pull into an awkwardly-angled parking spot, so I had good reason for my actions. But I see this all the time with people driving in Atlanta. People are in a hurry. For what? Tonight a spoiled kid trying to get into Kroger. Yesterday, someone trying to pass me as I was slowing for a stop light...like we were going anywhere soon. Two days ago I saw a light turn red and a car speed up and point blank fly through the intersection illegally and dangerously. A month ago I yelled back at another driver who honked at me while I was walking across a street because he was enraged to wait all of five seconds for me to cross out of his way.

This issue of reckless driving is hitting me more today because I was reading about two more recent deaths on Atlanta roads. And I think it is a problem. It isn't very safe out there. And I think of all of us have encountered people, whether on bikes, cars or on their own two feet, who have not followed traffic rules and are putting themselves and others at danger. So, this post is a short list of the major traffic violations in Atlanta, to hopefully provide better safety and educate everyone about some basic traffic laws, some of which, frankly, should be common sense.

Cars

Red lights mean stop, not accelerate through them. A great way to cause an accident otherwise. And no, having an expensive car does not make you exempt.
Flashing red lights also mean stop, but PLEASE, yellow flashing lights mean only caution and does not require a full stop.
If there are other cars around you, use your turn signal
Don't get stuck in an intersection with the light turns red. Stop at the line if you see the cars ahead of you aren't moving, even if you have a green light.
Properly and securely fasten truck bed liners and large objects you are transporting....or if you have that dishwasher in your the back of your truck, consider commuting on city roads and not the interstate in case of a mishap. The recent death was caused by falling debris, and that driver has been arrested for homicide. Check laws and object securing regulations because you will be held responsible if something happens.
Can we slow down a little? Intown roads really aren't meant for driving much more than 40 mph, especially in areas where there are lots of crosswalks and pedestrians. And besides, there are a lot of winding and curvy roads and interstates all over Atlanta, and high speeds make losing control of your car easier.
Related, I know some of the roads are curvy and narrow, but STAY IN YOUR LANE. One night I was doing non-stop defense driving because cars and MARTA buses were hedging into my lane and had I been right next to them, would have gotten side-swiped.
Cyclists are legally allowed to share the road with you, up to two abreast. They also follow the same rules of the road as you, so don't get funky at intersections and stop signs. If you got there first, go. It slows everyone up and gets confusing and inconvenient if you try to give the cyclist the right of way when the right way belongs to you. This is one occasion where it doesn't work out so well to "be nice".
It is STATE LAW to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Sure we are way the heck far way from New York City, but if someone steps a toe out in that cross walk, it means stop. I realize in some cases you don't have enough time to stop because you see too late the timid pedestrian trying to cross the street...but try your best.
Try not to stop your car in a crosswalk at a redlight. Those lines are there for a reason I've had to jut myself out in traffic when walking across intersections before, and once I found it really inconsiderate that someone in a wheelchair could not cross the street because a car had blocked the ramp down from the side walk.
When approaching a car in another lane that has stopped at a crosswalk, stop. A pedestrian is probably crossing the street in front of that car. For more great right of way tips, see PEDs.org.

Pedestrians

Push the button for a walk signal at intersections, then wait for a walk sign to cross...sometimes the walk sign purposely does not come on to allow for cars with a left turn signal and it would be nice if you didn't block people with turn arrows. You've been that car before.
Cross the streets at crosswalks. The other death this week was due to people crossing the street in the dark, not in a crosswalk.
If there is no stoplight, then you have the right away if you are in a crosswalk and cars have to stop.
And like my dad always used to say, not wearing all dark clothing really helps you be more visible, as well as walking toward traffic if you don't have a sidewalk so you can see what is coming at you.

Cyclists

Follow the rules of the road as cars and ride on the road. Technically riding on the sidewalk is illegal, and believe me, it can lead to accidents or near accidents. If you are under 13, it is ok, which I assume means ok in quiet neighborhood streets.
Two abreast at most, and it is actually a little safer to do this when you are on a multi-lane road
Ride on the right side of the street
Wear visible clothing, signal, and wear lights at night

I cannot believe that I almost missed this one--and it is a good one. Again, with the economy where it is and everyone trying to make a dollar go further, this is a good option for date nights (hint, hint men) and just because you deserve it. This is the Midtown Atlanta Shop and Dine Week. Starting TOMORROW, November 14th, through November 21st, you have the chance to try restaurants in the midtown area. And I know the slogan is "shop & dine" but you don't have to shop to dine. This is a great deal as you can get a 3-course meal for $25 or two dinners for $25--perfect for couples and ladies' night intown. 1. Park 75 Restaurant at Four Seasons Atlanta
2. Silk Asian Steak & Seafood
3. Murphy's

There are some new places that should definitely been checkout if you are open for something new, like Beleza and Cuerno. There is definitely something for everyone!

Appetite Stimulus Plan

I know it has been a few weeks since I have been able to post, but with all the drama with the economy, who can think of food? Obviously, restaurants do and I can again!

And with that, the Appetite Stimulus Plan is in effect from November 17th-21st. What is great about this is that 50+ restaurants will be participating. From Midtown, to Buckhead, Alpharetta and Vinings have great restaurants to try, or if you have your favorites, to go again. No, this is not exactly a critique, but I can tell you many on the list I have been to and would wager my favorite nephew that the food is that good! OK, maybe not the nephew, but I will give a top 5 list of my favorite on the list and worthy of your $35 for dinner (for 3-courses how could you fuss?) and $24 for lunch. In no particular order, your best bets would be:

1. Oceanaire (the best ultra-fresh seafood I have ever had)--the service and food is always spot on. http://www.theoceanaire.com
